A super-productive morning for me – this song and one for last week’s skirmish.
This one has a Waterboys influence, since that’s what I was listening to in the car early in the morning when a few of these lines came to me. Got out the banjo for the first time in a while.
I’ve written plenty of beer songs – it’s one of my favorite things.
I see him leering at you – I know what’s in his head
Though the light is dim I see his drunken eyes so red
So hold my beer, dear Molly – your honor is at stake
I’ll fight any man who thinks you are his to take
I’d recognize him anywhere – I knew him back in school
Though the years have ravaged him, his face is just as cruel
So hold my beer, dear Molly – I have a job to do
I’ll fight any man who dares to lay his eyes on you
Didn’t know he’d been released from upstate at the pen
He took a girl once from me – it won’t happen again
So hold my beer dear Molly – I hope to be right back
I don’t like to fight, but I’ll ring his red eyes in black
Looks like he’s a-leaving, he’s laying his money down
Smiles and waves right at us, he’s buying us a round
So hold my beer, dear Molly – while I step out the door
I’ve got to watch my brother walk out of my life once more
