I’m a late comer to songwriting and music. Although, I learned piano in my teens and can read music, I didn’t do a whole lot with it until about five years ago. I was at a party and started singing with some guys that was playing music I knew from the 60s and I had so much fun and I said to myself “Why am I not doing this?” So, I started taking voice lessons and learning to play the guitar. The guitar was way harder than I thought. So then I started writing songs for therapy and felt I had a knack for it, so I started seriously reading lots of books and writing lots of songs. I think I’m decent at lyrics, but I struggle more with the music part. I totally enjoy writing songs and the challenges it gives me to come up with interesting phrases and unique quotes. The more I write the better sense of vocabulary and imagery I feel I have. Since five years ago I have written over 200 songs and most of them in the past couple years. I am a member of NSAI and meet once a month with our local chapter of five or six people. We have one guy that has a music degree and he’s pretty good with lyrics and composition. I set goals every year with my music, so this year it’s to get better with the music part. I’m taking some guitar lessons and my teacher organizes bands, so will try to do that to get better on my rhythms. My other goal is to do a CD of my best songs, other than that who knows. I’m just having fun. Interested to hear what others are doing and thinking about this.
